The study focused on groundwater resources in the Rub’ Al-Khali Basin. It provided three important tools for water resource management: a hydrometeorological monitoring network, a GIS for water resources, and a three-dimensional numerical groundwater model. Detailed field investigations, e.g. inventory of existing wells, review of the monitoring network, investigations of specific abstraction areas, contributed significantly to the creation of a geological and hydrogeological model. A new telemetric monitoring network was installed and exploration wells were drilled to a depth of more than 2,000 metres.
