As part of the decarbonisation of aviation, airports are pursuing the goal of continuously reducing their carbon footprint by cutting their own emissions. At the same time, the aviation industry is increasingly developing alternative propulsion technologies such as battery-electric and hydrogen-based systems, especially for smaller and regional aircraft. To enable the use of such sustainable propulsion systems, the expansion of appropriate charging and refuelling infrastructure at airports is necessary.

The required energy can be provided either through on-site generation or by external energy suppliers. However, the technical and economic feasibility of these infrastructures is highly dependent on the location. Therefore, differentiated business cases are necessary in order to adequately reflect the respective requirements and framework conditions of regional airports and to develop viable implementation concepts.

Our services:

  • Benchmarking study on existing and future sustainable aircraft concepts (with electric and hydrogen propulsion)
  • Current business case analysis of regional airports
  • Feasibility study and prioritisation of sustainable aircraft concepts for individual regional airports
  • Market analysis of electric charging and hydrogen refuelling systems and concepts
  • Analysis of equipment requirements to determine the infrastructure needed for electric and hydrogen energy supply
  • Concept development for independent on-site generation of electric and hydrogen energy
  • Development of alternative business models for regional airports, taking into account independent energy generation
  • Development of an adaptable toolbox and guidelines for implementing the necessary infrastructure, based on transport demand and the airport’s business case
  • Development of an evaluation matrix to record and assess the impact of the measures
  • Application of the tools and guidelines and preparation of an implementation plan for up to six regional airports
