Heat exchanger tubes in fossil fuel-fired power plants are subject to high mechanical stresses in addition to corrosion, and are operated in the creep range. In order to avoid the resulting damage, which usually leads to the shutdown of the plant, the condition of the corresponding heating surfaces is continuously monitored.
In this context, the Dornier Power and Heat materials testing laboratory, accredited according to ISO 17025, carried out extensive metallographic investigations to evaluate the material condition of test tubes. The results enable the operator to estimate the remaining service life of the heating surfaces examined and to plan the resulting revisions.
